Fitness Claims and Marketing – How Our Emotions Control Us

As I progress in my studies (both academic and personal reading), I am becoming more intrigued with the how’s and why’s regarding our decision-making processes.  The more I learn about emotions and the psyche, the better I understand just how powerful the manipulation of one’s mind can be.

In the fitness industry, as well as others, there’s some mad cash to be made.  Take a look at any fitness magazine and the contents are flooded with advertisements.  Most, but not all fitness websites have some form of advertising in place or a product to generate revenue.

Go to any commercial gym and I can guarantee you there are people whose job is solely to generate revenue by initiating and closing sales of personal training packages and gym contracts/memberships. [Read more...]

How I Gained 6.2 Pounds of Muscle in 48-hours…

Here’s the deal.  I know I’ve been writing for the last two years about how we should all be sensible and practical when approaching this physique-enhancement venture.  But it’s time I come clean and be real with you once and for all.  I know, I know – some of you are going to be very disappointed but I just can’t contain myself any longer.

As an avid fitness enthusiast, reading is a part of my daily life.  My usual material rotates between online articles, training manuals, the occasional PubMed paper and even the good old magazine.  Oh yea, I have a confession to make – I am subscribed to both Women’s Health and Fitness Magazine. The Digg of the Fitness Niche? – FitMarker fills the Social Media Void

If you’ve been online for any period of time, the terms social media, social bookmarking and even social media marketing probably ring a bell.  I’m willing to bet everyone here has heard of Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Digg, StumbleUpon, Myspace, Delicious, etc.  The list is virtually endless.

In lieu of simply being aware of this social media extravaganza, I’m willing to wager that you probably have profiles on most, if not all of these websites.  If you don’t, you either aren’t “in the know” or you simply have no interest in such outlets.  That’s fine as I understand many of them are nothing but a big waste of time for some people.  That’s perfectly okay.

However, social media is a big reason many of us enjoy the internet and it’s largely responsible for how many of us stay up to date with all we’re interested in.  Heck, I know I rely on certain social media niche resources such as Sphinn to keep up with marketing news and while I have a love/hate relationship with my personal Facebook account (I even deactivated for more than a year once), it’s been monumental in my keeping up with old friends, teachers and colleagues.
