I just read this one again. You know I've never done dead lifts... maybe it's time to learn?

I understand your line of thinking but compound movements are not responsible for fat loss. And adding muscle to your frame does not increase your metabolism by as much as you might think. I remember Lyle McDonald writing about it and running the numbers. I think it was a measly 6-10 kcals per extra pound of LBM... so an extra 10lbs of muscle would net you 60-100 kcals burned. woopty doo. Don't write me off on the numbers but I know it wasn't anything substantial.

The actual movement will increase your metabolism by increasing expenditure for the time being but that's about it really.

Hi JC, I don't want to down play the role of dieting in getting ripped. It's definitely the most important key to losing weight and getting one's BF% down (it's common sense really). But I have to disagree that doing squats, dead lifts and bench presses will not lose you weight. Those are killer compound movements that will kick your muscle growth hormones into gear and as a result increase your metabolism and start burning the fat.

I guess where you're coming from is the belief that some people have, if they workout then they can pig out at McDonalds and still reap the fat loss benefits.

Cheers,
Elliot

On another note, I practice Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and squatting exercises and the deadlift are key elements in developing explosiveness.
