If you made it past the title, congratulations. When I see articles titled as such I usually mark them read in my feed reader or click off the page onto another article. I almost feel silly for writing such a headline, however everyone else is doing it so I figured it was my turn.
.
I suppose this article will go under the fitness myths category; perhaps I should create a new category called facetious or snarky, heh.
.
Okay folks, here I will reveal the Top 3 Exercises for Ultimate Fat Loss, sort of.
Squats
The squat in its many variations is such a wonderful movement. Being a compound lift, it hits almost every muscle in the body. It stimulates your quads, hams, glutes, lower back and abs like a wrecking ball to the nearest retail outlet going out of business. The movement is the primary reason for Lee Priests quad development and squats are what make the newbies on Starting Strength grow like weeds(the daily gallon of whole milk helps too).
However, squats alone will not make you lose body fat.
Deadlifts
Ah yes, the wonderful deadlift. Whether you do RDL’s or sport a 600lb deadlift, this movement can do wonders for your physique. It’s not uncommon for women with no rear end to have one suddenly appear within a few months of incorporating this movement into their routine. The deadlift is also responsible for the beefy backs of powerlifters all over the world.
However, deadlifts alone will not make you lose body fat.
Bench Press
Note to self: never bank on using the bench press on Monday evening as this is national chest day for all the bro’s. I really like the bench press for building mass in the chest. It’s a fairly easy movement to learn and teach and is always a good choice for building upper body mass. This seems to be the most popular movement of all time as no one cares about how much you squat or deadlift, it’s all about how much you bench! It’s evident that Arnold built his oak chest with the bench press as well as other pressing movements so there’s no doubt that it’s a great exercise to keep in your routine.
However, bench presses alone will not make you lose body fat.
Cutting Through The BS
No matter what anyone says, squats, bench presses, pink dumbbell curls or deadlifts are not going to make you drop body fat. There are actually no exercises that can make you lose fat, period. You can do all the movements known to man, stuff yourself silly and still never drop an ounce of body fat. If these movements were responsible for fat loss, every powerlifter on the planet would be ripped.
.
Then again, I have to pinch myself and remember that most people are looking for a quick fix, not necessarily a realistic approach. It would be easy to go to the gym, do a few sets of squats and presses if we were promised our efforts would render us shredded like Tyler Durden. However it’s rarely that easy.
The Truth
The only way to lose fat is by means of a caloric deficit. You create a deficit by monitoring your intake and eating less than you burn. Sure, extra exercise can help create that deficit if you are sedentary most of the day. People who sit at a desk for work can benefit from some extra movement to increase their expenditure. This will allow them to eat a little more food and drop fat faster than without any exercise at all.
.
I should also mention that squats, presses, deadlifts and any other form of resistance will allow you to retain lean body mass which is so crucial to dieting successfully. So while these wonderful movements play a role in the development of your ideal physique, they alone are not responsible for fat loss. So why do people keep writing about The Top 10 Exercises That Will Eliminate Your Love Handles? It seems they forget to mention you actually have to eat less. No way!
.
I suppose it’s because they are either ignorant, misinformed or just like to lie to people. What do you think?
.
Oh, I also just did an interview with Skyler Tanner. Click Here to check it out.

I just read this one again. You know I’ve never done dead lifts… maybe it’s time to learn?
Hi JC, I don’t want to down play the role of dieting in getting ripped. It’s definitely the most important key to losing weight and getting one’s BF% down (it’s common sense really). But I have to disagree that doing squats, dead lifts and bench presses will not lose you weight. Those are killer compound movements that will kick your muscle growth hormones into gear and as a result increase your metabolism and start burning the fat.
I guess where you’re coming from is the belief that some people have, if they workout then they can pig out at McDonalds and still reap the fat loss benefits.
Cheers,
Elliot
I understand your line of thinking but compound movements are not responsible for fat loss. And adding muscle to your frame does not increase your metabolism by as much as you might think. I remember Lyle McDonald writing about it and running the numbers. I think it was a measly 6-10 kcals per extra pound of LBM… so an extra 10lbs of muscle would net you 60-100 kcals burned. woopty doo. Don’t write me off on the numbers but I know it wasn’t anything substantial.
The actual movement will increase your metabolism by increasing expenditure for the time being but that’s about it really.
On another note, I practice Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and squatting exercises and the deadlift are key elements in developing explosiveness.
absolutely! they are great exercises for building power and explosiveness. they just aren’t your fat loss solution…
Is that Berkhan doing the 600lb deadlift? That dude is a beast.
Great article.
yup, that’s absolutely right!
Have you read his latest post on LeanGains? I’m pretty stoked.
sure have. I am pretty excited myself.
Diet, diet, diet! My life’s biggest problem. I have been slowly improving my diet for the last 3 years. I finally started kick boxing and have gone from power lifting to training to look good. I went from 200lbs to a lean 185 and it feels great.
Thanks for stopping by Studenomics! Your blog is great so expect to see me around more often.
It sure does feel great to lean out and start to see your hard work paying off. glad to have you around.
I came across this blog through Lifehack.org, and I”m glad I did. I like your no non-sense approach, and this is the kind of health related reading I enjoy. You’ve gained a loyal subscriber pal!
Ibrahim, how did you find me through LifeHack? was it a comment? I sure don’t remember being there!
I have a feeling I will be perusing your content quite frequently as I am heading back to University this Fall.
cheers
Most of these people lie for their own benefit, or hack other people’s misinformed articles to pawn them off as their own. Unless, of course, they’re ignorant and require an intervention.
The truf, you speakz it! Sadly, in this industry, we have all run out of things to say. There is nothing new under the sun but there is always a different way of writing/presenting the information. I just get really annoyed when I read these stupid articles about “do these exercises to drop fat.”
I am tempted to leave comments suggesting they take a little more than 5 minutes to think about writing something decent for a change. However, they wouldn’t get approved.
thanks for posting this. I recently came to the realization that the calorie formula (in / out) is really the only way I am going to lose the flab I have been carrying for near on 20 years now.
I’m targeting a calorie intake for the weight I want to be, not the weight I am now. This is giving me a tangible target to strive for and so far it seems to be working. Over the past three weeks I am averaging around 2lbs lost per week, which feels great and is maintainable.
And I am including strength exercises three days a week (plus running on the other days) to make sure I retain the muscle and not sacrifice it during the weight loss.
I only wish I could dial the clock back 10 years and start back then, but I guess it’s never too late to make a change.
thanks for the blog – it’s a great resource.
Thanks for your comment, Matt. I am glad you enjoy the blog.
You are exactly right about what you are doing. Strength training to retain mass + some added cardio to ensure a deficit is a great way to burn body fat. I understand wishing you could turn back the hands of time, however the most important concern is that you take action now. You seem to already have done that which is all that matters.
I am glad you stopped by and hope you hang around. Contact me if you ever need anything or get stuck in your fat loss efforts.
AWESOME article! hahah, that was brilliant, I’m digging stumbling healthranking everything that one!
