In Search of Maintenance

Over the last few weeks I have received multiple emails regarding maintenance intake. These particular folks were dieting for a period of time and had some questions about how to set up their maintenance intake and what to expect with the added calories etc. Upon receipt I figured this would be a good time to touch on a subject many folks have a very hard time with. Deloads and Training Breaks

Muscle growth, it’s what most of us who wish to look great naked are desperately yearning for. I think it’s safe to say most of us probably train too often and too intense at times. I also believe we easily forget to maintain an objective approach during this journey as well. If I told you it’s absolutely necessary to take a break every now and then you might assume I ate a few paint chips as a kid.

I admit, I am guilty of not always taking a break when I should. I confess that as I’ve failed forward and experienced injury, I now realize how important scheduled breaks really are. This is why I now program a “deload” or training break every 4-6 weeks. [Read more...]

Spinning Your Wheels? How I Went From Newbie To Intermediate Trainee

This is a detailed personal experience on how I went from newbie to intermediate trainee and sort of an expansion to my coaching article. While this piece and the coaching article are similar, I feel it’s necessary to touch on the endless wheel spinning cycle many experience. I find that as I work with more newbies alike, they all seem to be going through the same stuff I went through. I hope to provide some hope and guidance with this one.

In the last 8-9 years or so I have learned a lot. I have done a ton of stupid crap regarding training and dieting. While a few of these mistakes have set me back in achievement and anatomical health, experience(both good and bad) seems to be the greatest teacher. [Read more...]

Built For Show: A Review

Built For Show is written by Nate Green of The Nate Green Experience. The book contains Four Body-Changing Workouts for Building Muscle, Losing Fat, and Looking Good Enough to Hook Up. It’s specifically written for the young(er) male population who train for vanity purposes as opposed to athleticism.

The books foreword is written by Lou Schuler, who authored The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I highly respect Lou as a writer and when I heard he endorsed the book I was quick to pick up a copy. [Read more...]
